Memory Lane: Fashion Star Fillies Sassy Sixteens

It's time for another Memory Lane post! :)

Here's a toy from the 80s that some of you might remember: Fashion Star Fillies from Kenner.  These brightly colored "hip" horses came with fashion accessories and featured "cool" hairdos.  The regular line of Fashion Star Fillies were released first, and then came a line of "Sassy Sixteens", younger, smaller fillies in their teen years.

Corinne and Ariel, two of the "Sassy Sixteens".

My next door neighbor had Corrine, and I always thought she was just beautiful. ;)  I had Lady Lovely Locks' horse Silky Mane, and I would take her with me when my neighbor and I played together.  As I remember, Corinne usually played the role of Silky Mane's headstrong teenage daughter. :}

When I saw these two cuties at Goodwill a year or so ago, the memories came rushing back.  I was thrilled to add them to my collection. :)

Corrine from all angles:

In spite of her strong personality, she has a very sweet face. ;)

Ariel from all angles:

This gal really rocks those 80s curls! ;)

I don't know much about the Fashion Star Fillies line, but for those of you interested in a more in-depth look, be sure to check out Ghost of the Doll's pages about them HERE.

Did any of you have these when you were growing up?

  1. Hannah, do you remember the Lalaloopsie (sorry if I misspelled it!) Tinies Walmart Exclusive set a while ago? I was really looking forward to it.

  2. Hi Anonymous! I'm so sorry. That was one of the reviews that got left by the wayside. Every once in a while that happens. I'll see if I can find the pictures I took and dig that up. The review may have to wait until after Mount Hermon, though. Thanks for the reminder, and sorry to keep you waiting! :)

  3. These horses sort of remind me of the G1 MLP Sweetheart Sister Ponies: http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Category:Sweetheart_Sister_Ponies

  4. Hmm, I'd never heard of, or seen, these before. I find horse toys fairly often in thrift stores, but I don't believe I've ever run across a Fashion Star Filly. When we were growing up, my younger sisters had some She-ra horses that were kind of similar, stylistically, but none of these. They're pretty cool-looking, and I imagine that the Fashion Star Fillies would have been a nice alternative for those that found the design of MLPs to be too cartoony and wanted something equally colorful but with a more accurate physiology. How big are they? I'm curious as to what size dolls/figures would be in scale to use them for mounts.

  5. I had one of these horses that I used to use for my Barbies and I never knew what they were called. Thanks for this post.

  6. Hi, MyLittleMegara! Yes, they do definitely have some similarities to the Sweetheart Sister Ponies. :) I had Dainty in my collection. ;)

    Hi Mark! Good to hear from you, as always. ;) I'm so sorry I didn't think to include their height. They are right around eight inches tall (from front hoof to head). They're almost the right scale to be fillies for Barbie horses. They work pretty well as ponies for the Lady Lovely Locks dolls. Hope this helps a bit!

    You're welcome, Aileen! :)
