A Living Room Makeover

Hubby had a week of vacation this past week, so we spent it doing something crazy: totally rearranging our living room. ;)

It was supposed to be a simple matter of swapping the places of a few pieces of furniture, but it turned into a major decluttering/reorganizing/getting rid of operation that resulted in a fun, open new look.

Which is why I haven't been blogging. It was a huge project, and I wanted to use all the time I could with Hubby while he was off. We had a lot of fun, though, and it was great to have him around a little more than usual. :)

(For those of you interested in what my living room used to look like, you can see a few pictures in this post, but you'll have to scroll down through a few other pictures first.)

Here are some pictures of what our living room looked like throughout the course of the week:

And here's what it looks like now:

I love how much simpler and open it looks. I think my favorite part of the changes is my new work station:

I get to sit by the window and look up at my fan mail, my awesome 25th Anniversary Beauty and the Beast calendar, and my character sheet. :)

I have a fun little shelf with all of my art supplies and some of my collectible toys.

And I've got another shelf with more art supplies, writing materials, and doll repair supplies.

Unfortunately, tonight we had to bring several boxes and totes back into the living room (since they were stacked on our bed and we needed a place to sleep). ;) My goal over the next week is to continue going through things. I'd love to make the whole house a little simpler and a little more organized. I'm tired of feeling overwhelmed by stuff. Except for my toys. I never get tired of those. ;)

Seriously, though, I'm trying to take an objective look at my collections and continue to thin things out a bit. I've already done some downsizing over the past few months, but there's still more to do. I feel like I have so much right now, I can't fully enjoy everything.

Of course, I'll never be a minimalist. When I get to my "bare minimum," it will probably still look like too much to a lot of people. But that's okay. I just have to worry about what works for me and my family. ;)

I'm sorry to keep you waiting on the earlier promised posts, plus my report on our writers retreat. When Hubby is back to work next week, I'll spend a little more time blogging. For this week, it was fun having a shared project and spending time together. :)

Hope you all have a wonderful new week when we start the month of NOVEMBER. (Seriously? Already?) I'll be back with more bloggy fun soon.

Doll Room Tour on YouTube 2016 and Doll Rooms From the Past

Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've done a room tour, so I thought I'd post one on YouTube to share how my collection displays have changed. I also thought I'd post some pictures here for those of you who aren't interested in long videos. ;)

As I mention on YouTube, I'm planning on repainting my room this summer, so I'll be changing my displays and trying to downsize pretty majorly. (I think. Let's see how strong I can be in my resolve.) ;) I have some pictures I'd like to hang up, and at this point, I have almost no wall space left. Plus, after six years of collecting, I'm just flat running out of room. I want to reevaluate my collection, get rid of some of the things that aren't as special to me, and try to be a little more proactive in planning what else I purchase.

Besides feeling the need to downsize, I have several things I'm saving up for, including a possible trip to Arizona this fall to visit my best friend around my birthday. I also need to start saving for Mount Hermon next year and our church's Ladies Retreat. Oh, and I recently found out that one of my story locations in Trinidad, California is actually a rental house 200 feet away from the beach. I thought it would be super fun to save up and stay there some weekend. ;)

There are other things, like windows for our house, paying off some debts, swimming lessons for the girls, and more. And I'll admit it, I'm thinking about saving up for one of the Limited Edition Disney Store dolls that will hopefully be released for the live action version of Beauty and the Beast next year. I've never been able to afford a Disney Store LE doll yet. It would be so great if it worked out this time around. :D Of course, at this point I have no room for a LE doll...yet another reason for downsizing. ;)

If Hubby gets more hours in his new position this summer, that will help tremendously with some of these things, but I'd love to do what I can to help. I have so much. I don't really need it all.

So, here are a few pics from my room as it is currently.

My doll rooms with lights. :)

My toy and book shelves on our dresser.

Zelfs, Lalaloopsies, jewelry, and my favorite picture of me and Hubby.

Plush friends on the bed.

My Beauty and the Beast curio.

My little white shelf with extra books and my live action Cinderella collection.

My Frozen and Tangled shelves.

This picture was taken by accident. (My phone often takes pictures without telling me.) I thought it looked kind of cool, though. My daughters and I decided it looked like a magical portal in my room. Who knew there was one there all along? ;)

So if you'd like more detail on any of these spots, feel free to stop by my YouTube channel and check out my room tour videos. You can see Part One HERE and Part Two HERE.

As I was working on these videos, I was curious about some of my previous displays, so I found some old blog posts with pictures and videos of my doll rooms/displays and how they've changed over the years. If you're interested in sharing my trip down memory lane, you can check out the following links. ;)

My Dolls (August 4th, 2010) ~ This was back at the very beginning of my doll collecting and blogging, in 2010. Here are the original girls from my 18" collection and their displays. This post also has my original "personality profiles" for each doll. ;)

Thrift Store Find and a Rearranged Doll Room (September 23rd, 2010) ~ This was the first of many rearranging projects, about a month after the previous post. ;) It was a fun time to collect. I had almost nothing, so it was easy to find things for my dolls. Everything remotely doll-sized ended up coming home with me. ;) Thrift stores and garage sales were treasure troves and scavenger hunts in which I always found success. I can't even tell you how many things I now pass by that I would have snatched up in a second at this stage of my collecting.

My Updated Doll Rooms (September 1st, 2011) ~ The next post I found was a year later. In that amount of time, my doll accessories and collections had grown enormously. This was also my "computer desk as a doll room" stage. It was a great way to repurpose, especially since the computer desk was a free hand-me-down from a friend. Although at this time my focus was still primarily on my 18 inchers, I was starting to branch out into other doll lines. This was also when Belle's Bulletins was starting to gain momentum.

Rearranging My Doll Rooms (January 9th, 2012) ~ This was the stage when my 18" doll rooms pretty much made up 90% of our room. ;) I had displays on both dressers and one in my newest repurposed doll room: our old entertainment center. You can't see it as much in this post, but it's more visible in the next one.

Hayden and Jenna's New Room (April 21st, 2012) ~ Wow, I didn't realize I'd had the rooms my dad made for this long. Four years? Time definitely flies by. This was the first of the three doll rooms my dad made for me. This original one sat on top of the previously mentioned entertainment center until the other rooms were built later that year. I remember how excited I was to have my first "official" doll room. :)

Just in Case You Thought I Was Being Lazy... (July 17th, 2012) ~ This was one of my typical apologetic posts, explaining why you guys hadn't heard from me in so long. ;) The reason? What else? Rearranging! (Among other things.) ;) Even though things were pretty cluttered at this point, it was one of my favorite periods of collecting. I loved all of my BFC Ink dolls in their fancy dresses, my doll rooms, and everything. I'd forgotten all about my Pleasant Company Samantha I had for a while. I think she was one of the dolls I ended up selling. Shortly after this post, I got really overwhelmed by the amount of big dolls I had and sold several of them. You can also see by the inelegant plastic drawer unit full of stuff that my tiny toy collections were growing as well.

In this post, you also get a bonus look at my daughters' playroom. :)

My New Doll Rooms, Post #1! (September 1st, 2012) ~ This was the first in a series of posts I did right after my dad finished my other two doll rooms. I'm only going to link to this first one, because each of the posts in the series have links leading to the next. I had so much fun filling these new doll rooms. It was great to look back and see how I originally had them arranged. ;) This also was one of the most in-depth looks at my doll displays and accessories. I took pictures of almost every inch of space. ;)

The End of the School Year and a Special Tour (May 24th, 2013) ~ This was the only post with pictures of my room I could find for this stage of collecting, and it also includes a tour of my whole house. (Yet another fun batch of memories. Our house has changed a lot, too!) This was the "white shelves covering the windows but allowing me to have lots more stuff" stage. ;) While it was nice having so much display space, I eventually got tired of not being able to see my window, and I was constantly worried about sunlight damage to the toys and books on those shelves. My room also started to feel very closed and cave-like during this stage, since there were shelves everywhere and almost no wall space at all.

New Doll Room Vids Up on YouTube (April 30th, 2014) ~ This short little post has no pictures, but has links to YouTube videos of my room during 2014. There weren't too many changes overall, aside from a few more white shelves added and more stuff collected. ;) You can see how my interests grew and changed to include even more doll and toy lines.

New Room Tour Video Up and Your Questions Needed (January 28th, 2015) ~ And here is an example of my collecting at its craziest. My philosophy at this stage was "if you have it, display it." I felt it was silly to have things stored away and never enjoy them. While I still hold to this point of view overall, I found that having this much stuff out on display just got too overwhelming, which is why I recently went through things and decided to store some of it. I still only store what I can fit in my room, and I try to rotate things occasionally. As crazy as this stage was, though, it was also a LOT of fun to see all of the bright colors and cheerful faces every time I entered my room.

Thankfully, I have a very patient husband who is not creeped out by dolls. ;)

***

There are probably other posts with pictures that I missed, but this gives you a basic rundown of the changes through the past six years. Hope you enjoyed the memories as much as I did. ;)

How have your collections changed through the years? Do you ever look back and regret a doll or toy you no longer have? What direction do you see your collecting going in the future?

New Room Tour Video Up and Your Questions Needed

Hi everyone!  I hope your week is going well!  I want to apologize to those of you who left me comments on the blog this past week.  I've gotten behind and had a lot of other things going, like working on Kickstarter rewards and taking care of a sick kiddo.  I also got sucked into the Facebook vortex.  It's amazing how many friends from your past start connecting with you when you switch to your real name. ;)  This week I plan on responding to all of the comments.  Thanks for your patience! :)

I thought it was about time for me to do another room tour video.  A lot of my displays have changed since my last room tour video.  I also wanted to try out my phone camera and see how it did.  The picture's a lot clearer than my regular camera, but I definitely need to practice holding my phone with a steady hand (sorry if I make you guys seasick). ;)  You can see the video HERE.

If you'd like to save the video for later, or just want a little preview, I also took some pictures of my shelves and things to share here. :)

Here are my doll rooms.  I don't go into a whole lot of detail on the video.  I'll probably do a video on just these three rooms at a later date.

Here are my white shelves next to my doll rooms.

The tops of the shelves have some of my Beauty and the Beast collectibles:

The first set of shelves have my Strawberry Shortcake dolls, my rainbow setup of my other small toys and collectibles, and a shelf of books.

The middle section has my Pullips, J-Dolls, and mini Blythes, my Fluttershy collection, and my blind bag-sized G4 Ponies.

The next section has my G1 Ponies, my extra G4 Ponies, and another shelf of books.

My Frozen and Tangled collections are on the shelf next to my closet.

Then I have this fun little white shelf that my parents painted for me.

It's nice having my BFC Ink, Karito Kids, and Hearts For Hearts Girls all together in a nice space where I can enjoy them. :)

In the far corner is my curio and dresser.

You can click on the pictures to see more detail, although I can't guarantee how great they are up close. ;)  Also, be sure to watch the video if you want to hear more about each section.

And speaking of videos, I'd like to do another "Ask Beast'sbelle" (or should it now be "Ask Hannah"?) Vlog for my YouTube channel.  In this vlog, I'll video myself answering the questions instead of having a group of dolls for you to look at. ;)  In order to do that, though, I need some questions from all of you! :)  So, if you have a burning question, a suggestion or request for the blog or my YouTube channel, or want to share something else on your mind, leave me a comment below.  I'll respond to questions and discuss suggestions in the vlog. :)  My plan is to do the Vlog sometime during the second week of February, so that gives you a little less than two weeks to leave me your questions. :)  I look forward to hearing from you guys! :)

Talk to all of you later!  I'm off to do some writing, and then I'll start working on blog comments later tonight. ;)

UPDATE:  I've now received enough questions for my daughters that I've decided to include them in the vlog as well.  You won't see their faces, but I'll come up with a way for them to answer your questions in person.  So if you have questions for them, please leave them in the comments as well. :)  They're very excited! :)

Quick Post: My New Room Setup

Hey everyone!  I thought today I'd share what I worked on all last week. :)  As you know from one of my previous posts, I had a pretty nasty mildew problem with one of our bedroom windows.  Since we haven't gotten the window replaced yet, I had to rearrange things so that the area on that side of the room stayed fairly open (that way, I can keep an eye on things and make sure the problems don't continue). ;)

Here are a few overview pictures:

You can also see a brief video tour on my YouTube channel HERE. :)

I'd love to hear what you think!  As I said in the video, there are some things I miss about the old setup, but I really love how nice and open everything is now.  It looks a lot less cluttered and excessive. :}  I ended up downsizing and condensing quite a bit, so in the coming month there will be a few things on eBay (although many little things just went to Goodwill). :)

Have a great week, everyone!  I hope to have another post up for you by the end of the week, but I have a lot going, so there may not be much up until next week.  You can be sure I'll be back as soon as I can, though. :)

The End of the School Year and a Special Tour :)

Whew, what a week!  There are always so many activities crammed into the last month of the school year, especially when you have more than one kiddo enrolled.  I'm not sure what I'll do next year at this time when I have all three girls in school and a Kindergarten graduation thrown in to boot. :}

In addition to all of the regular end of the year parties and such, we had a few unexpected surprises this week.  First, Middle Gal participated in a county-wide writing contest and won first place for her age group. :)  There was a ceremony at 6:30 last night at one of the local schools.  Her story was entitled: "A Girl Can Become a Princess" and was hilariously adorable (not that I'm biased or anything). ;)  She won a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble, so we'll be going on a shopping spree sometime next week. :)

The other unexpected blessing of the week was a visit from one of my dear friends from Southern California (the same friend I stayed with last summer).  She and her two children came to visit us today.  We had a wonderful time catching up while the kiddos played.

Of course, having company usually requires a clean house, and ours was...well...not.  Most of you who have followed me for a while have probably realized by now that I'm not the most organized person in the world.  And that could be considered the understatement of the year. ;)  Between my natural aversion to housework (and my skillful ability to avoid it), the back and forth schedule of the school year, and just the fact that I have 3 children and a busy husband, our house is not normally a clean place.  I do like having a calm, clean environment, but pulling it off is easier said than done.  This week, though, I actually managed to welcome my friend into a mostly clean and organized home, aside from a few piles and a rather large desk in the middle of our living room (more on that later).  I couldn't have done it without my daughters.  They all did a great job pitching in and helping above and beyond what I expected. :)

And this evening, as I thought about getting a blog post up, I realized that I should seize this opportunity to take you on a tour of my home.  That, and to capture the lovely cleanliness while it was still here. ;)

So, without further ado, welcome to my home. :)

I know you've already seen my "photo studio", but I'll share it with you again anyway.  I also use it for cooking, dishes, and laundry when I must. ;)

My sink, cabinet, and kitchen appliances.  I tried hanging my horse Christmas lights on the curtains, but it didn't work out the way I'd hoped. :}

The other side of the kitchen.

Next we have the dining room, which leads out to the carport and the backyard.

My paperwork/purse holder/place that keeps me as organized as I get. ;)  The drawers are used for craft supplies and movies.

Our table.  I found the world map at Target when all of the "back to school" stuff was on sale and thought it would be fun to hang in the dining room. :)

The corner has Hubby's Lego desk.  He still had a lot of his Legos from his childhood, and I really wanted him to have a place to use them.  We found the desk at Goodwill for a decent price and set up his "Lego station". :)  The girls have really enjoyed playing with Daddy's toys with him.

Here's our living room.  All framed portraits have been pixelated to protect the innocent. ;)  The desk you see in the middle of the floor was originally in Middle Gal and Little Gal's room for their dolls but was not working out for them.  It will eventually become my new computer desk after a lot of rearranging. ;)

Our couch, CD tower, and front door.  I love the fact that our living room wall has a cutout connecting to the kitchen.  It's great for those times when I have to cook but still want to be a part of the conversation going on in the living room. :)

Another view of the middle of the room.  Since I don't have a laundry room, the loveseat usually holds the sock baskets. :)  You might also notice the pile in the corner.  Those are our records that we need to go through...whenever Hubby and I both have a few days free at the same time and feel like doing that instead of something fun. ;)

A view from the front window.  Some of you might recognize Belle's "Wedding Tree".  Our hedge also serves as the backdrop for many of my doll photos. :)

Our piano, trampoline (great for energetic girls on days that are too hot or too cold), crates of school work that need to be sorted and organized (sigh), and our Furreal Butterscotch Pony.  Butterscotch was a Goodwill find from several months ago.  She was just $15, an incredible deal considering that she was originally $200 or so.  I bought her thinking of reselling her locally, but no one wanted her.  Then the girls got attached.  And to be honest, I think she's pretty cute too. ;)  Her right ear falls off every few minutes, and her neck doesn't have its full range of motion anymore, but the girls still love her.  I consider her a cheap pet that doesn't require food or manure clean-up.  Works for me. ;)

And here's where all the magic happens, folks: my computer desk. ;)  This is the very spot where I dream up blog posts for your entertainment. :)

I have some fan mail taped to one side of the desk so I can enjoy it, some office supplies within reach, and a few pictures of my family (sorry you can't see them).

On the other side of my computer desk is our flat screen TV (purchased on an excellent Black Friday sale two years ago) and the cedar chest my dad made for me...with more piles to go through...mostly paperwork. :}

And here is our hallway.  Exciting, I know. ;)

To the left, we have Oldest Gal's room.

Her book and doll shelf is in the corner.

She has a loft bed with another bed underneath it.

The top of the loft bed is her doll room.  All three girls love climbing up and playing together. :)

This dresser is one we painted when I was pregnant with Oldest Gal.  It's always reminded me of Buttered Popcorn Jelly Bellies. :)

Oldest Gal's desk.

Directly across the hall we have our little bathroom.  Not the most exciting room in the world, but definitely necessary. ;)  Please excuse the stuff on the floor and the clothing on the plastic drawer unit...we were in the middle of bath time prep. :)

Our bathroom sink.  I'm really looking forward to having a medicine cabinet so our counter can be a little less cluttered. :}

I think I mentioned Oldest Gal's Open House project in an earlier post.  Her class put on a living wax museum.  They all had to dress up like historical figures and paint a backdrop to set up behind them.  Oldest Gal was Sacajawea, and this is the backdrop she painted all by herself.  It seemed like a shame to toss it after all the work she put into it, so we hung it in the hallway.  All three girls have enjoyed making up scripts and performing them in front of the backdrop. ;)

And here's Hubby and my room, the one you're probably the most familiar with.  It's the last room on the right.

In the corner is our closet.  None of our closets came with doors, so we hung curtains up instead.  This beautiful one is a shower curtain I purchased shortly after we moved to our house. :)

My Beauty and the Beast curio.  Sigh.  Just looking at it makes me happy. :)

And here's the rest of that side of the room.

As you can see, I've once again tried a new arrangement with my shelves.  I really wanted to make a backdrop for Belle and company to use for my Belle's Bulletins posts.  I'm not sure if it's going to work out, but I thought I'd try it just for fun.  I basically just decorated a piece of white foam core board and taped it to the shelf unit. :)  I may add a bit more to it if I like the way it works.

My nightstand/shelf. :)  You'll notice that I started hanging my boxed mini Lalaloopsies on the wall, leaving room for the other Target exclusives, of course. ;)

Our bed.

The other side of the room.

You've already seen my doll rooms, but I thought I'd share them again. :)  Sorry the picture's a bit blurry.  (P.S.  There's a bit of a spoiler in this picture.) ;)

I love my new shelf! (It's the one on top of the dresser.)  My parents had this stored away and let me use it.  It's wonderful having a special spot for all of my 80s and 90s toys and my Boyd's Bears. :)

Across the hallway is Middle Gal and Little Gal's room, just recently rearranged.

They have a shoe holder over the door to store their Barbie and Disney fashion dolls.  The Snow White framed poster is one that was given to me when I was six and we stayed with a friend of my parents' who worked at Disneyland.  This poster was only available to Disneyland employees. :)

The shelf is one I just found at Goodwill for $11.99.  I'd been looking for something to hold the girls' dolls and doll accessories since we were moving the desk out of the room, and this worked just perfectly. :)

I had to laugh at this picture.  The things dolls go through when they're owned by a 5 year old and a 7 year old!  Wouldn't this make a great "caption that photo" entry? ;)

One corner of the room.

Shelves and tubs.  I'm not thrilled with all of the stacked tubs, and I'm hoping we can condense a bit.  The plastic tubs and drawer unit fit perfectly under the desk that was in here before, but they're not exactly convenient stacked on top of one another.

The girls' dresser.  And I apologize to all sensitive moms out there about the extension cord lying on the floor.  I'm trying to work on a better solution for Little Gal's nightlight. :{  We've talked about the importance of using cords wisely, and she's been pretty good about it.  It is temporary, though.

The girls' "bunk bed".  It's actually another loft bed with a mattress underneath (thanks for giving it to us, Aunt C!). :)  As you can see, Middle Gal really enjoys decorating her wall. ;)  That's what I love about having an older house, though.  I can let the girls hang things without stressing about them ruining the paint job or anything. :)

That concludes our tour for the time being.  I hope you all enjoyed it. :)  I wish I could personally invite all of you over to chat about doll stuff and enjoy a snack.  Since that's not possible, I thought I'd try for a "virtual visit".  Come back anytime and stay a while!  And just think, when you visit me here, my house will always be clean.  I couldn't guarantee the same thing for a live visit. ;)

My weekend will be pretty busy, so I may not have posts up for a bit.  I'll have something for you by next week for sure. :)

Hmm, it sounds pretty quiet down the hall...I think I have three sleeping munchkins! :)  Time to curl up with a good book or watch a movie and wait for hubby to get home. :D
